History of Bingo

Bingo reached North American soil in 1929 and was called “beano”. Edwin S. Lowe, a New York toy salesperson renamed the game bingo after hearing the excited player shout “bingo!” He then hired Carl Leffler, a Mathematics Professor in Columbia University to help him increase the possible combinations in the bingo cards. Leffler was able to invent 6,000 different bingo cards in 1930.

Bingo then started to gain popularity when a Catholic Priest in Pennsylvania used bingo to raise money for church activities. By the year 1934, thousands of bingo games were per week and presently nearly $90 million dollars are used-up solely in North American weekly play of bingo.
